Chapter 13

Six hours after arriving at the SEAL base, the two teams had been thoroughly briefed and prepared for a waterborne assault on a frigate that Bauer had been tracking. Bauer and his four operators along with the twelve-man SEAL team stowed their gear and weapons into the four Zodiacs on the beach ninety minutes before dawn. Their target, the Kitsune, was a medium-sized vessel that was approaching the six-mile mark from their present island location.

Emerson and Halsey piled into the first Zodiac, helmed by Radcliffe, while Bauer and the others split up amongst the remaining boats.

As they pushed off into the water and sped to the north, Halsey secreted himself against the sidewall, his black jumpsuit and tactical vest nearly melting into the dark background.

“Hey, did you know that there are squids out here as long as Connecticut?” said Emerson, who was crouched across from him.

“Please, you watched that movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea too many times.”

“Yeah, I think that was actually filmed out here in the Philippines. Those things are huge and could suck all four of these boats under.”

Halsey nervously peered over the edge at the whitecaps aglow in the moonlight. “Hell if they can.”

“I talked to a guy who used to live in the Philippines…had grown up fishing these waters and said his old man was yanked out of his boat by a monster squid when he was a teenager.” Emerson snapped his fingers. “Imagine a grown man being snatched from his boat, just like that.”

“What?” Halsey’s face looked like a white glow stick.

Emerson made slashing motions with his hand. “Only thing that saved him was his machete. He kept chopping and thrusting until the thing let go and he swam away.”

“That’s bullshit.”

“You talkin’ about squids?” said a burly SEAL next to Emerson. “Those fuckers mess with you, just remember one thing…turn your body sideways as they’re pulling you into their mouth so they can’t swallow you whole. Might give you an extra second to stick ‘em in the eye so you can escape…that is, if your lungs aren’t ready to blow out from being too far under.”

Halsey silently mouthed several curse words while pushing his back further into the wall of the Zodiac then glanced over at Emerson. “Thanks for the confidence boost, meathead.”

Emerson patted the large tactical blade on his vest while chuckling. “Suddenly, the streets of San Diego don’t seem so bad, eh?”

Halsey gave him a strained smile then made the sign of the cross.

Radcliffe leaned back from the console, giving a hand signal for their five-minute warning as the frigate came into view.

The SEAL commander glanced back at Halsey and Emerson. “Remember, once we’re all on board, we are the door-kickers…you guys stay at the rear and provide cover support only.”

“Copy,” said both men in unison.

As the boats arced to the left and then swung up towards the rear of the frigate, each of the boat crews got into position for the rapid assault, contemplating the uncertainties aboard the approaching leviathan in their midst.
